AnecdoteAbout 1930, John left the Methodist Church (in which he had been very active) because they hired a poor man in the area, who was a member of the church, to be the janitor. This man was behind in his church dues, and the congregation refused to hire him because of this. John tried to sway the congregation to hire the man, but they refused. John then indicated that he would no longer be a member of the church because of this decsion, and walked out.11
